Over 450 friends joined us at the Capital Hilton on April 24th for our 2002 Annual Human Rights Celebration honoring Judge Patricia Wald and the Women of Afghanistan. 2002 honorees serve as inspiration to all through their pioneering efforts in the development of domestic and international human rights law, to empower locally based human rights activists and to press for justice for victims of human rights abuses.
"She fought the fight of her generation", said the Honorable Ruth Bader Ginsburg of Judge Patricia Wald as she presented her with our International Human Rights Award. A champion for ensuring justice for vulnerable members of society, Judge Wald returned from The Hague last November, where she served as a judge on the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia from 1999-2001. We were honored to recognize Judge Wald's lifelong commitment to human rights.
After premiering Power of the Heart, our moving video honoring Afghan women, Dr. Sima Samar, now Human Rights Commissioner of the Afghan
Transitional Government, accepted our International Human Rights Award on behalf of Afghan women everywhere. Joining Dr. Samar were Professor Mahboba Hoquqmal, the new Minister of State for Women's Affairs, and 7 Afghan women representing diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds who inspire hope for the future of their country. We were honored to acknowledge these activists who struggle daily to empower and enlighten Afghan women and girls. To view Power of the Heart go to our homepage and click on the "cybertheatre" icon.
Celebration guests included Afghan Ambassador to the United Nations Dr. Raven Farhadi, Deputy Chief of Mission Haron Amin, RefWID President Sima Wali, Pakistan Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi, and others from the legal, foreign policy, NGO and diplomatic communities.
Judy Woodruff, CNN Prime Anchor and Senior Correspondent, was a marvelous Emcee and the incomparable Odetta brought the celebration to a close with a powerful performance that had the entire room singing.
